Compatible with: 10A outlet compatible with Type C & L plugs. 16A outlet compatible with type L plugs only. Newer Schuko-Bipasso outlets will accept European type C (ungrounded) and type F schuko (grounded) plugs in addition to both 10A and 16A Italian type L plugs.

The 10A plugs have 4mm prongs with live and neutral spaced 19mm apart while the 16A version has 5mm prongs spaced 26mm apart. The standard 10A plug adapters are all that is needed for American travelers.

A type L travel adapter will convert your American (type A/B) plugs to a 3 prong (grounded) configuration that will fit the type L outlets found in Italy. They do not convert the voltage or frequency of the electrical supply.

Most universal adapters do not have a type L plug. The Skross Pro World is a notable exception and has a movable ground prong which allows it to connect to type J, L and N outlets but they are not common.

Yes, they are cross compatible and can be used safely. Type C plugs are 2 prong (ungrounded) and are therefore not suitable for connecting grounded appliances.
